To enter Conversation mode, press and hold the panel with your palm-this reduces the volume level of music and activates the ambient listening mics.
Tap twice to control playback, swipe forward or backward to navigate tracks, and swipe up or down to control volume. The outer panel of the earcup features a capacitive touch surface. To the right of these buttons, there’s a USB-C port for the included USB-C-to-USB-A charging cable. The side panel on the right earcup houses the controls, including a Power/Pairing button, a button with a Mic on it (that confusingly enables the Dirac spatial audio effect), and an ANC High/Low/Off switch. Another quirk is that they appear in your Bluetooth menu as “MP43453” rather than by their consumer product name, which might confuse some people. Annoyingly, we had to manually re-pair the headphones multiple times during testing. We didn't have any issues pairing with an iPhone initially, but the auto-pair feature didn't work reliably. Both codecs are increasingly common in affordable models, so their omission is notable. The headphones are compatible with Bluetooth 5.0 (which is somewhat dated in 2022) and support only the default SBC Bluetooth codec, not AAC nor AptX.

Cloth grilles protect the internal 40mm drivers that deliver a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz, while can’t-miss-it retro-style lettering denotes the left and right earcups. The pair fits securely and remains exceptionally comfortable over long listening sessions. The memory foam earpads feature a generous amount of faux-leather padding, as does the headband. Semi-matte surfaces and clean lines define the outer panels. Generous Battery Life, Inconsistent ConnectivityĪvailable in black, the Monolith M1000ANC headphones look refined and modern. We recommend you save up a bit more Sennheiser's HD 450BT headphones ($199.95), which stand out for their audio quality, noise cancellation capabilities, and in-app EQ. Unfortunately, this is overshadowed by inconsistent Bluetooth connectivity and other issues that detract from the overall experience. And, surprisingly, both their core audio and ANC performance are respectable for the price.
But that doesn’t stop the Monoprice Monolith M1000ANC over-ears ($129.99) from trying. That’s because engineering quality active noise cancellation (ANC) for anything less than about $150 is a difficult task. The best noise-cancelling headphones all have one thing in common: They're not cheap.
